The Saturday Rides

Short Map   LongShort Map   LongLong Map

THE RIDE START POINT IS IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE SHELL STATION AND THE CONVENIENCE STORE (not the car wash) ON NORTH SANTIAGO BLVD IN ORANGE, CA.  THE APPROXIMATE ADDRESS IS 2702 N. SANTIAGO BLVD.  THIS LOCATION IS JUST SOUTH OF THE INTERSECTION OF LINCOLN AVE. AND NORTH SANTIAGO BLVD.  NORTH SANTIAGO BLVD IS JUST EAST OF THE 55 FRWY AT THIS LOCATION.

START TIME IS 7:30 SHARP.   HELMETS ARE REQUIRED.

THESE ARE ADVANCED RIDES.  THE PACE IS VERY FAST AT TIMES.   A NUMBER OF MEMBERS FROM OTHER CYCLING CLUBS PARTICIPATE.   THE GROUP OFTEN INCLUDES STATE, NATIONAL, AND WORLD CHAMPION CYCLISTS AS WELL AS SOME PROFESSIONALS   THE GROUP DOES NOT STOP FOR MECHANICALS OR OTHER ISSUES OTHER THAN EMERGENCIES.

THERE ARE THREE MAIN RIDE ROUTE OPTIONS.   ALL THREE RIDE OPTIONS START AT THE SANTIAGO BLVD LOCATION AND FOLLOW THE SAME ROUTE FOR THE FIRST 15.7 MILES TO THE INTERSECTION OF IRVINE BLVD AND SAND CANYON IN IRVINE.  THEY ARE NICKNAMED “SHORT-SHORT,” “LONG-SHORT,” AND “LONG-LONG.”  THE FIRST 5 TO 6 MILES AFTER THE START ARE GENERALLY, THOUGH NOT ALWAYS, RIDDEN AT “CONVERSATION PACE” AND USED FOR WARMUP.  AT THIS POINT THE “RIDE SCRIPT” CAN BE INFLUENCED BY A NUMBER OF UNPREDICTABLE FACTORS.  MOST OFTEN THE PACE PICKS UP AND CAN BE EXTREMELY FAST UNTIL THE INTERSECTION OF IRVINE BLVD AND SAND CANYON WHERE THE “SHORT-SHORT” RIDERS PEEL OFF.  OTHER RIDERS AND GROUPS OF RIDERS JOIN IN A LONG THE ROUTE OFTEN SWELLING THE PELOTON NUMBERS TO OVER 100 RIDERS ON IRVINE BLVD.

THE “SHORT-SHORT” RIDE ROUTE IS GENERALLY FLAT AND ABOUT 31 MILES IN LENGTH.  RIDERS USING THIS OPTION MOVE TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PELOTON PRIOR TO SAND CANYON BLVD AND THEN TURN RIGHT AT THIS INTERSECTION.  THE PACE THEN BECOMES EXTREMLY FAST AND RIDERS MUST BE VIGILANT.  THE GROUP TURNS RIGHT ON IRVINE CENTER DRIVE AND THE PACE REMAINS AGGRESSIVE UNTIL CULVER BLVD.   AN OPTION AT THIS POINT IS TO TURN LEFT ON CULVER, GO TO MAIN STREET, AND JOIN THE “FOODPARK RIDE” THAT STARTS IN IRVINE.  OTHERWISE THIS GROUP RIDES BACK THROUGH TUSTIN, ONTO NEWPORT BLVD, AND THEN RETRACES THE ROUTE FOLLOWED IN THE MORNING BACK TO THE START POINT.  ONE OPTION IN TUSTIN IS TO CLIMB “BROWNING RD” BEFORE HEADING BACK TO NEWPORT BLVD.

THE “LONG-SHORT” RIDE OPTION CONTINUES ON IRVINE BLVD PAST SAND CANYON WITH THE “LONG-LONG” RIDERS.  THIS RIDE IS ABOUT 43 MILES LONG.   THIS GROUP TURNS LEFT UP EL TORO RD AT A SPIRITED PACE THAT INCLUDES A FAST TRIP UP THE COOK’S CORNER CLIMB AND THEN SLAMS BACK THROUGH SANTIAGO CANYON.  SOME RIDERS MAY CHOOSE TO ADD THE SILVERADO CANYON LEG (ADDS 12 MILES) TO THIS ROUTE.  AFTER DECENDING “DUMP HILL” INTO VILLA PARK THE GROUP TURNS ONTO NORTH SANTIAGO BLVD AND RETRACES THE LAST FEW MILES TO THE ORIGINAL START POINT.

THE “LONG-LONG” ROUTE IS ABOUT 56 MILES LONG.   THIS OPTION IS VERY TOUGH AND CHALLENGING.   OFTEN THE PACE IS SET BY NATIONAL OR WORLD CHAMPIONS AND PROFESSIONAL RIDERS.  AFTER THE “LONG –SHORT” PEELS OFF THIS GROUP CONTINUES ON WITH SOME  SPIRITED CLIMBS IN MISSION VIEJO PRIOR TO A HARD TRIP UP THE 1984 MISSION VIEJO OLYMPIC  ROAD COURSE CLIMB OF LA PAZ  RD.  RIDERS THEN COMPLETE A LONG FAST GRIND UP ANTONIO PARKWAY, FOLLOWED BY A SLAM THROUGH LIVE OAK CANYON AND UP “THE WALL.”  AFTER A VERY FAST ASCENT OF THE COOK’S CORNER GRADE THE RIDERS RE-GROUP AT THE MOJESKA CANYON TURNOFF AND HAMMER BACK THROUGH SANTIAGO CANYON.  SOME RIDERS MAY CHOOSE TO ADD THE SIVERADO CANYON LEG TO THIS ROUTE.   AS WITH THE “LONG-SHORT” ROUTE, AFTER DECENDING “DUMP HILL,” THE RIDERS HEAD BACK INTO VILLA PARK AND THEN TURN RIGHT ONTO NORTH SANTIAGO BLVD AND BACK TO THE RIDE START POINT.

The Sunday Ride

Sunday Map

GENERALLY FLAT AND APPROXIMATELY 52 MILES LONG

THE RIDE START POINT FOR THOSE WHO DRIVE TO THE START IS THE PARKING LOT IN FRONT OF ANAHEIM HILLS BIKE SHOP. THE ADDRESS IS 5675 E. LA PALMA IN ANAHEIM HILLS. THIS LOCATION IS JUST WEST OF THE INTERSECTION OF IMPERIAL HIGHWAY AND LA PALMA BLVD.

THE RIDERS LEAVE THE PARKING LOT JUST BEFORE 7:00 AM. AND RIDE TO THE "OFFICIAL" START POINT ON THE SANTA ANA RIVER TRAIL JUST WEST OF IMPERIAL HIGHWAY NEXT TO THE PORTABLE TOILET. MOST OFTEN OTHER RIDERS HAVE RIDDEN TO THIS POINT. THE RIDE STARTS AT 7:00 SHARP FROM THIS POINT HEADING WEST TOWARDS THE BEACH.

THE NUMBER OF RIDERS PARTICIPATING FLUCTUATES WEEK TO WEEK DEPENDING ON A NUMBER OF VARIABLES. SOME DAYS THE GROUP IS VERY SMALL AND ON OTHER OCCASIONS, ON THE HIGH END, THERE MAY BE UP TO 25-30 RIDERS. MOST PARTICIPANTS ARE MEMBERS OF THE CANYON VELO CYCLING CLUB. THE RIDE "CULTURE AND PHILOSOPHY" IS DIFFERENT FROM THE SATURDAY CLUB RIDE. THIS GROUP TRADITIONALLY DOES STOP FOR MECHANICALS AND IS MORE STRUCTURED. BEING SAFE IS MAJOR FOCUS AND HELMETS ARE REQUIRED.

THERE ARE TWO RIDE GROUPS EACH SUNDAY. THE FRONT GROUP CONSISTS OF VETERAN CLUB RIDERS AND GUESTS. THE FRONT GROUP DOES NOT USUALLY STOP FOR MECHNICALS OR OTHER INDIVIDUAL RIDER ISSUES.

THE SECOND GROUP IS MORE FOCUSED ON FINISHING AS AN INTACT GROUP. RIDERS WHO HAVE NOT RIDDEN THIS RIDE BEFORE ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO RIDE IN THE SECOND GROUP OR AT THE BACK OF THE FIRST GROUP UNTIL THEY KNOW THE "RIDE SCRIPT" AND PERHAPS MORE IMPORTANTLY THE RIDE VETERANS KNOW "THAT RIDER."

THE FIRST LEG OF THE RIDE FINISHES AT THE BEACH AND THE GROUP THEN HEADS EAST ON PCH FOR A FEW HUNDRED YARDS TO THE FIRST PUBLIC RESTROOM IN NEWPORT BEACH. THIS IS A RESTROOM STOP AS WELL AS A PLACE TO REPLENISH WATER BOTTLES. IF THERE ARE ANY "STRAGGLERS," THIS IS ALSO A RE-GROUPING SPOT. THE STOP IS GENERALLY 5 – 8 MINUTES IN LENGTH.

THE RIDE NEXT HEADS EAST ON PCH FOR A FEW MILES BEFORE TURNING LEFT AROUND THE NEWPORT DUNES RESORT AND INTO BACK BAY.

AFTER BACK BAY THE RIDE CONTINUES ALONG UNIVERSITY BLVD BEFORE TURNING LEFT ONTO HARVARD.

AT WALNUT THE GROUP TURNS LEFT FOR ABOUT A MILE AND THEN RIGHT ON TUSTIN RANCH RD.

AT COLINA RD. JUST PAST IRVINE BLVD. THE RIDE TURNS LEFT AND THEN MOST PARTICIPANTS CLIMB UP OVER BROWNING RD AND DROP BACK DOWN AND CROSS NEWPORT BLVD ON FOOTHILL BLVD.

THE RIDE TURNS QUICKLY ONTO OLD FOOTHILL THEN RIGHT ON HEWES AND PROCEEDS BACK THROUGH ORANGE. SOME RIDERS STOP AT A BAGEL SHOP IN VILLA PARK WHILE OTHERS CONTINUE BACK ALONG SANTIAGO BLVD ONTO SANTA ANA CANYON.
THE RIDERS TURN LEFT AT LAKEVIEW BLVD AND THEN ENTER THE SANTA ANA RIVER TRAIL FOR THE LAST 2 MILES BACK TO THE ANAHEIM HIlLS BIKE SHOP STARTING POINT.
