TdC2012

April 29, 2012; Long Beach, CA:  Canyon Velo's 18th year participating in the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure was a record.  Eighteen members and friends of members signed up and raised money for the privelege of riding over the Long Beach and LA Harbor bridges (normally off limits to cyclists).  They were treated to extraordinary scenerey in the harbor and around the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  Most of us did the 60 mile route which was plenty challenging with over 3,000 feet of climbing.
In addition to riding in the event, the club is also involved with operations for the event.  Rich Savitt was chair of the Route Logistics Subcommittee which designed the route and oversaw route marking and route safety operations.  Several club members helped with route marking on the day before the event as well as route operations on the day of the event.

CarlKimberlyThe specifics of the RACE ACROSS AMERICA are recounted in the 2010 race summary that can be found earlier on this site.  The 2011 race effort was similar and yet very different from the 2010 version.  My goal here is to give a brief summary of the race.   Again, more detailed information about the race can be found on the 2010 RAAM summary.

And an early one for Canyon Velo... Ed Kisee,Jeff Rhodes,Sean Mckernan, and Paul Leek raced the 4 man 40+ 100 mile TTT on January 14 at Stagecoach.  We beat the standing record by 42 seconds, setting a new 40+ record and won 1st place.  4hrs 49mins bang on including one stop for refills of about 3 mins with 4800 ft climbing and head winds.  All in all it was truly amazing...can't put it into words..  The course record was reset  by a 30+  RAAM team and was 2mins 10 secs faster than us..We beat the standing 2010 record by 42 secs..and were the 2nd fastest team.  Next year we hope to beat the 2011 course record.
See you out there.

Furnace Creek 508 2010… The Final Piece

First let me say that this has been an incredible year from my perspective in the arena of bicycling experiences.  I have been riding for over 25 years but to have had the opportuni
ty to ride in the RAAM, The HooDoo 500, and finally the Furnace Creek 508 at the age of 60 years old is unbelievable.

…the HooDoo 500 out of St. George Utah was held last weekend and Team JDRF had another 4 mixed tandem team entered ... my rear motor was Nadine Howard a very strong young lady from Canada…

…we did very well ... rode the course (519 miles) in 28 hrs. 38 minutes and were the second overall finishers... had over 30,000 ft of climb and handled the brutal headwinds without incident ...the overall average speed on my tandem was 19.7 mph... we had a great time...
